Chapter 51

Kalvin dug for well past the time limit he’d estimated Thames could defend for. Twenty minutes had turned into an hour and then three. During all of which Father Malkovich stood strong fighting more and more complex and powerful undead monsters while flinging out waves of light and increasingly larger balls of fire. Skulking creatures made completely of bones and cartilage, hulking beings of muscle and rot, and slender creatures of flesh and cord, all fell to the old Priest until finally, Kalvin tossed out the final shovel of earth and climbed up to stand beside the man.

“It’s done,” Kalvin muttered as he moved to stand behind Father Malkovich. His arms and body ached and his creation unraveled from around his fingers. The energy drained from him as he gazed out at the destruction the man had caused. The open field before them was covered in bodies. Some were burnt to a crisp, others were sliced into pieces, and others still looked like they had been torn apart by a savage beast. Floating above it all was a dense, nearly black cloud of Necrotic Energy. It was so thick that as Kalvin breathed in and called it towards him, he could feel its chill as it crawled over his skin and sank into his body, erasing the fatigue he felt almost instantly.

He greedily drank from the ocean of powerful energy left behind by the monsters' deaths. More and more of the dark cloud trickled into his body, turning from a thin mist that lurked beneath his skin, into a tangible heavy fog that pressed against his bones and sank into his muscles. Kalvin didn’t want that moment to end, constantly devouring, the feeling of a bottomless hunger being sated. It must be exactly how the ghouls felt each time they tore into a fresh meal. All good things must come to an end though.

“Lad, I need to get my flock settled in. Will you be alright?” Father Malkovich’s rasping voice cut into Kalvin’s mind, wiping away enough of the trance he’d fallen into so that Kalvin could muster a response.

“Uhm… Sorry, what? Why… did the monsters stop attacking?” Kalvin asked, his voice filled with puzzlement and a slight note of sorrow.

“You stopped digging, so they are no longer drawn here,” Father Malkovich explained calmly as he lowered himself into the pit.

“Oh… What?” Kalvin blinked as he tried to process the old man’s words.

“The monsters here, the undead specifically, become enraged when someone disturbs the earth. So each time you pulled out some of the earth they came seeking vengeance.”

“I see… So what should we do next? Do we need to head back and start transporting the bodies?” Kalvin asked softly as he tried to consider the logistics of transporting such a huge number of corpses one or two at a time.

“No. I have them all here with me. I’ll lay them each down, but as soon as a body touches the ground, the cycle will continue. The dead will rise and come for their pound of flesh.
